We don't usually think of media as an ecological problem, but over the past forty years research and response to environmental risks associated with media technology has grown from activist roots to a topic of concern in academia, policy circles, and industry. The field of media and communication studies has largely focused on media content, and now a growing number of scholars are examining the hardware’s environmental impact, from the sourcing of raw materials to the disposal of dead and outdated media technology. ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Richard Maxwell is Professor of Media Studies at Queens College, City University of New York. His research has focused on international communication and media, political economy and media, surveillance and data protection, and the environmental impact of media. His forthcoming edited collection is the Routledge Companion to Labor and Media. His recent publications include Media and the Ecological Crisis (co-edited with Jon Raundalen and Nina Lager Vestberg) and Greening the Media (with Toby Miller).
